LET’S TALK – EP. X – CHÂTEAU BRANAIRE-DUCRU: THE ELEGANCE OF SAINT-JULIEN BETWEEN TRADITION AND PLEASURE
Chateau Branaire-Ducru is one of the most elegant classified growths in Saint-Julien. In this episode of Let’s Talk, Adrien speaks with François-Xavier Maroteaux about the history, innovation and philosophy behind Chateau Branaire-Ducru.
Through this authentic conversation, discover why Chateau Branaire-Ducru continues to attract Bordeaux wine lovers thanks to its balance of tradition, precision and immediate pleasure.

In this episode of Let’s Talk, our series of intimate conversations, Adrien speaks with François-Xavier Maroteaux about one of the great names of Bordeaux’s Left Bank: Château Branaire-Ducru.
Located in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, Branaire-Ducru embodies a certain vision of Médoc elegance: a subtle balance between finesse, consistency and precision. Less demonstrative than some neighboring estates, the château stands out for its reliability and its ability to deliver year after year, vintage after vintage.
Through a spontaneous and sincere conversation, François-Xavier Maroteaux shares his vision of a deeply vibrant estate, where family tradition goes hand in hand with a constant desire to innovate. He speaks about heritage, transmission, and also about the sense of uncertainty that is sometimes necessary to continue moving forward and creating.
This exchange also highlights the unique identity of Branaire-Ducru: a great wine for ageing, certainly, but also a wine that can already provide pleasure in its youth. Between technical precision and a straightforward approach to wine, the estate reminds us that wine is above all about sharing.
Through this episode, we continue our commitment to giving a voice to iconic estates and key figures of the wine world, exploring exceptional terroirs and telling the stories behind great wines.

Château Branaire-Ducru: an iconic Classified Growth of Saint-Julien
Adrien Laurent : If Branaire-Ducru were a celebrity?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: Maybe Antoine Dupont. He is not necessarily the most visible person on the scene, but he is always there when expected.
Through this comparison, François-Xavier Maroteaux perfectly describes the identity of Château Branaire-Ducru: a wine recognized for its consistency, elegance and precision.
Located in the Saint-Julien appellation, in the heart of the Médoc, the estate is considered one of the historic references among the great wines of Bordeaux. Its style is built on balance, combining finesse, structure and accessibility.
A family estate at the heart of the Bordeaux vineyard
Adrien Laurent : Branaire is above all a family story?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: Yes. We are the fourth family after Jean-Baptiste Branaire, who started the story in 1680. My family purchased the estate in 1988.
François-Xavier Maroteaux: The estate was managed by my father until 2017, and today by myself. We live this property as a family.
Like many great Bordeaux estates, Branaire-Ducru is deeply rooted in family transmission. This continuity helps preserve the identity of the château and the style of its wines across generations.

A château that lives all year round in Saint-Julien
Adrien Laurent : Branaire-Ducru is a château that lives all year round?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: Yes, it lives seven days a week. Some employees live on the property, so there is real life here throughout the year.
Adrien Laurent : Do you live at the château yourself?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: No, my mother lives there. It allows me to see her almost every day.
At Château Branaire-Ducru, the château is not simply a place where wine is produced. It is also a living place, animated daily by the family and the teams working on the estate.
This permanent presence contributes to the human identity of the property and reinforces its strong connection to the Saint-Julien terroir.
Innovation and constant questioning in a Bordeaux Classified Growth
Adrien Laurent : Your first day at the estate?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: I would say apprehension, the fear of telling yourself: now that we have taken the step, we have to succeed.
Adrien Laurent : Do you still feel fear today?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: Yes, a little. And like in every sector, it is good to have a little fear. It allows you to keep innovating.
In the world of great Bordeaux wines, excellence requires the ability to constantly evolve. At Branaire-Ducru, this desire for innovation accompanies the estate’s daily work while respecting the château’s historic identity.
Charlie Chaplin and Branaire-Ducru: an anecdote surrounding the estate

Adrien Laurent : What is something surprising about Branaire-Ducru?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: Apparently, Charlie Chaplin was buried with a bottle of Branaire-Ducru.
Difficult to verify, this anecdote nevertheless contributes to the mythology and imagination surrounding some of the great Classified Growths of the Médoc.
Visiting Château Branaire-Ducru: an experience in the heart of Bordeaux wines
Adrien Laurent : Can people visit Branaire-Ducru?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: Of course, all year round. You simply go on our website and book your visit.
The estate welcomes visitors throughout the year to discover the château, its history and its wines.
This openness reflects a desire to share the wine experience beyond tasting itself, directly in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyard.

Branaire-Ducru: a wine to age or to enjoy today
Adrien Laurent : Branaire-Ducru: to drink now or to cellar?
François-Xavier Maroteaux: You can already enjoy many vintages today. Even very great vintages like 2022 are already approachable.
François-Xavier Maroteaux: And if it is not ready yet, then we wait. But if it tastes good, we can always open a second bottle.
Like many great Saint-Julien wines, Branaire-Ducru has excellent ageing potential. However, the estate also embraces a more immediate vision of pleasure, with wines that can already be enjoyed young while still evolving beautifully over time.
Branaire-Ducru, the balance between tradition, elegance and pleasure
Through this episode of Let’s Talk, Château Branaire-Ducru appears as much more than a Classified Growth of the Médoc.
The estate embodies a vision of wine built around the balance between family heritage, innovation and accessibility. Through the words of François-Xavier Maroteaux, we discover a property deeply connected to its terroir and identity.

This conversation also reminds us that a great Bordeaux wine is not defined solely by its ageing potential or reputation, but also by the emotion and pleasure it can provide today.
